Vintage upright
basses that work.

Kays, King Mortons, American Standards — the basses working musicians have been playing for decades. I occasionally have one for sale, and I fix them when they need it.

Been playing these
since the '80s.

When I bought my first upright bass in the '80s, the best options were the same basses you can still find today — Kay, King Morton, American Standard. Built from the '30s through the '70s out of laminated plywood, these are the instruments everyday players could actually afford and carry to a gig.

The carved stuff — your ten-to-sixty-thousand-dollar orchestral bass — nobody's hauling that onto a stage at a bar. These old laminates are what the music was built on.

Over the years I moved from playing to fixing them, and from minor repairs to the more involved work: neck resets, soundpost fitting, bridge work, structural repairs. I occasionally have a bass ready to sell. This site is here so you know where to find me.

Not a shop. Not a business. Just someone who knows these instruments.

I can fix most things.

Old basses break in predictable ways — tops crack, bridges warp, necks shift, sound posts fall. Most of it is fixable if you catch it. If you've got an upright that needs work, reach out and tell me what's going on. I'll be straight with you about what it needs.
